Memorial Bike Ride for Jordan McKay in San Francisco

The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition is working with family and friends of Jordan McKay to organize a memorial bicycle ride. It will take place Tuesday, September 30th, at 7pm.

Family, friends, neighbors, and bicycle enthusiasts are invited to gather at the east end of the Panhandle (McKinley statue near Fell and Baker streets in San Francisco). The ride will stop for a vigil at 15th and Cabrillo where Jordan died, and then ride to a bonfire on Ocean Beach. Those who wish to participate in the vigil are encouraged to bring a flower or candle.

“I would like to bring life, love, and peace to the place where he was taken so suddenly,” says Elisa Litsky, Jordan’s girlfriend. “I feel that Jordan would want people to come together and ride, something that he loved doing so dearly.”

Comb jellyfish

Explorers have documented hundreds of spectacular marine species in a survey off the coast of Australia.

Species identified include this ctenophore, or comb jellyfish.

Sea slug (nudibranch)

The survey, by researchers from the Museum of Tropical Queensland, is the first systematic inventory of soft corals and the many beautiful creatures living in their surrounding ecosystems.

The four-year census took place at islands off the Great Barrier Reef, and at Ningaloo Reef.

Soft coral

The research team documented about 300 soft coral species, such as this Dendronepthya.

Of these coral species, 130 are new to science.

Sea star (Nardoa rosea)

Corals face threats ranging from ocean acidification, pollution and warming, to overfishing and even predation by starfish.

White topped coral crabThe team found dozens of small crustacean species, previously unknown to science.This white topped coral crab was collected off Heron Island.

Green seaweed

Researchers believe this Pseudocodium, a green seaweed found at Heron Island, is potentially a new species.

Fan worm (Sabellid)

The survey helps mark the International Year of the Reef.

Twisted nudibranchResearchers left behind artificial “dollshouse-like” habitats for animals like this twisted nudibranch to colonise, for collection in years to come.
